Was macht eine VPN und woher weiß ich, ob eine auf meinem PC aktiviert ist?

Hallo, ich verstehe nicht viel von Computern und hoffe daher, dass irgend wer mir helfen kann.
Also ich wollte wissen, was eine VPN macht, also wozu sie gut ist, also wovor sie mich schütz und woher ich weiß, dass eine VPN auf meinem OC aktiviert ist.
